Lest We Forget

Today marks the 100th year anniversary of when the shooting stopped and the guns were laid down to mark the end of the First World War.

Remembrance Sunday is always a landmark day in my calendar – because in my eyes it shows great respect, honour and tribute to a generation that gave everything they had to give us our future. At heart I am a Royalist and Patriot – but sadly saying such things like thatImage result for first world war colour film gif now days open up connotations of racism and narrow-mindedness and that is something I don’t stand for and I can imagine the Men and Women that gave their lives 100 years ago wouldn’t stand for it either.

This post is not about today’s politics, today’s situation or location in the world. But about respecting and honour the biggest sacrifice for the greatest good.

As found on the Royal British Legion website it tells us the Poppy is; A Symbol of Remembrance and Hope worn by millions of people. The story of the Poppy comes from Flanders fields in Belgium. The Poppy was the first flower to grow in the freshly churned ground of soldiers graves and inspired the poem “In Flanders Fields” by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae after visiting the site and grave of his friend and fallen soldier.

Image result for ww1This day is such a big part of our history, not just nationally for our country but also internationally for world history, which deserves the utmost respect and honour. Each year I go to town and watch the parade. Seeing the different factions of the forces come together to march for the service is always overwhelming and beautiful.

So please take this moment to pause and think of the people who gave for us. To show respect and give a two-minute silence in their name.

One final note I would like to add – Blackadder Goes Forth, the final season of this show was set on the Western Front during the WW1 and even though it’s a comedy the final episode pulled out the stops and become a beautiful homage to the war, the lost and the fallen. Every time I watch the final scene where they are preparing to go over the top I get choked up. Because the script, the acting and the tone of that whole episode is perfect. The ending see the cast in slow motion filter into black and white image of the battlefield and then filters into a shot of a Poppy field in vibrant red.

If you are not sure on what I am talking about give this a watch.

Thank you for sharing this moment with me, no matter what your thoughts or feelings are on today, I am glad you stopped to take in mine, have a moment of reflection and just absorb the true magnitude of the day.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

The Haunting of Hill House – The Review.

Comments 16 Standard

I am home, I am home, she thought; now to climb.

Recently I have been watching “The Haunting of Hill House”, or commonly known as, the Haunted House on the Hill, The Hill Haunting House, or that show that makes you poo your pants! For some reason everyone I have spoken to struggle to put the name together properly . . . maybe it’s the show that has scarred them too much.

Firstly I want to begin by saying this review will be a SPOILER FREE review. One because I don’t like being THAT guy and Two, because the show needs to be watched rather that told. I won’t be able to do it justice if I try to explain the ending, the twists and the resolution.

I went into the show, hearing so many people rave about it, sing its praises but also claim the nervous wrecks they became from it. Now horror films aren’t really my thing, I don’t think they are made these days with fear and horror in mind, but more to show special effect and a bucket full of fake blood. But I pushed on and jumped into this and wow I am so glad I did – I loved it! It is so much more than a horror show.

The premise of the show is about a family being haunted by mysterious supernatural forces within a house. The narrative jumps across about 30 years, from the family as kids moving into the house, to present day where they have all grown up in different ways after the ordeal of the house.

The main story revolves around 5 siblings who have all taken different paths in life after several traumatic experiences from their childhood. Showing different coping mechanisms from Drug Abuse, to Denial, to Over Compensation. I’ve read and agree with that each sibling in the show is a symbolic version of a step of Kubler-Ross “Five Stages of Grief” process. Which thinking back to how all the characters act and process their surroundings it becomes very obvious that theory could be spot on.

Another aspect of this show that I loved is the cinematography and the style of shots. Most memorably Episode Six which included an 17 minute long shot. Which is beautiful. Giving the desired impression that the single shot is happening in real-time. While choreographing swift and solid movement with the cast and set to not interrupt the shot. You will know the scene when you see it and afterwards just think “Wow” – I did.

Overall the show, the feel of it and the story is superb, gripping and captivating. Even with the scares involved. The true horror I think comes more from the depiction of Human Nature and how it reacts to unreasonable events, or events you logically can not make sense of.

Please go and watch it. I can not stress enough how much I enjoyed this show and how I want everyone to witness it. True horror making at it’s best.

Side note – after I had finished it, which I had started while moving into a new house (I know right), I had a small dose of paranoia set it, I found myself standing in the empty spare bedroom in the dark one morning getting ready for work, thinking about the end of the show and what it all meant. But the more I thought about it, the more my mind began to play tricks on me with sounds and imaginations of what could be behind me. Silly I know but I put this down to how good the show was, the idea and story stuck with me and played on my mind so much that I felt it could be real.

One final tidbit that I learnt when I was on about episode nine was from an article I read about the show and the missing ghosts. Take a read over HERE – I can’t promise it is spoiler free, but I can promise shock, this article goes into explaining how the show has ghosts all through it but you just don’t notice them because you don’t know where to look. The sheer amount of detail the show runners put into this is amazing. They knocked it out of the park and I for one love that.

Anyway enough of my ramblings, it’s Friday night. Pop Netflix on and start this show. You will not be disappointed.

Have a great weekend boys and girls  . . . . if you survive that long.

Bohemian Rhapsody – The Review.

Comments 8 Standard

I am struggling to find a way to start this post. Does that happen to you guys? Do you get lost in a sea of “Hey Guys”, “Morning” and “Welcome back” – well that is me this morning. So I am going to just jump into this post.

Because last night I went to the cinema to watch Bohemian Rhapsody and I was blown away.

For the longest time I have been a Queen fan, their music, talent and story has always been a part of my life. Top three favourite bands of all time and annoyingly it took me a good week and a bit to go see the movie when it came out. But I made a point to go this weekend, we’ve been very busy as you might know with house stuff but it was time to take a break.

So me and the GF went out for dinner, then popped over to the Cinema for some overpriced ice cream and a cute impromptu date night. With Bohemian Rhapsody on the cards we were set to go.

Let’s begin. Get on your bikes and ride!

Two years ago Channel Five did a docudrama about Freddie, his life, his troubles and his death – The Freddie Mercury Story: Who Wants To Live Forever. If you ever get a chance to watch this please do. It’s amazing. In my eyes this film and that Docudrama compliment each other so well they are almost like a double feature. Then when they announced they were making this movie I was hyped and psyched.

I loved this movie, the entire thing was amazing, breathtaking and emotional.

Following the life of Freddie Mercury a young Parsis man in 70’s London being discriminated for his heritage, his style and his teeth. We see Freddie meet May, Taylor and Deacon, form the a group called “Queen”, take some big gambles, record some unique styles and sounds, then just watching their music and career go from strength to strength.

But at the same time watching his lavish and promiscuous social life take its toll on his friends and real relationships as it spirals out of control into a drug binge.

The film hits all the emotional notes you’d expect, you take the journey with the band, feeling the highs and tingle of them writing; Another one Bites the Dust or Bohemian Rhapsody, to the lows and troubles of Freddie being played, relationships breaking down and then watching him realise and get diagnosed with AIDS. The last 40 minutes of the film I had a frog in my throat, it chokes you up big time. But that is his story, the magic behind the Great Pretender.

And what a story it is – another thing that really helped this film was the incredible casting, because for me the entire cast were spot on.

Malek obviously goes without saying absolutely nailed his performance as Freddie. But saying that the whole band were amazing; Lee, Hardy and Mazzello playing May, Taylor and Deacon bounced off each other perfectly and it’s exactly what I would imagine the real band would have been like.

Even having Mike Myers as Ray Foster the EMI exec who tries to tell the band that Bohemian Rhapsody is too long and not what the people want, claiming that no one will ever rock out and head bang in their car to that song  . . . . (Yes they made that joke and I seemed to be the only person in the cinema that laughed) was amazing casting.

Overall the film was amazing, I am still in awe of it. This morning I woke up thinking about it on so many levels and I can not recommend it enough as it’s a story you need to know and see. I can see it making an impact next February when Award Season starts. You have heard it here first!

SUNSHINE BLOGGER AWARD

So today feels like a day of awards. I had not long posted The Neat Blogger Award found HERE. When the ever so delightful Abbie tagged me in this.

Now I am not one to let my loyal lovely followers and fans down. So here we are again. Typing up another award (I love it, these are the best). You might have noticed the timeline doesn’t match up. That award was on Tuesday and it is now . . . not Tuesday (unconfirmed what day I will be posting). That is because I didn’t want to Saturate the market as it were. Keeping you all guessing, wanting more.

Shall we begin.

It was a lousy afternoon at work, the skies were grey and the air warm and humid. Suddenly a notification flew into my Twitter box. I had been mentioned in a Tweet by @WhatAbbieSays – Thank you for that lovely! Here is here Award if you want to find out more about here. Hit HERE now!

If you do not follow her then we need words, sit down, gather round and let me tell you about our heroine Abbie. Who can be found over on “What Abbie Says” she is such an; awesome, sassy, caring, amazing, lovely girl who supports everyone, doesn’t sugar coat it and then enjoys a cheeky Gin and Tonic when the day is done. I can’t remember how we met, but it can’t have been too long ago as I’ve only been here less than a year. But it feels like I have known her for years. I am going to move on now in worry that this starts to shape up into a soppy love letter or estranged fan mail letter.

The Questions

Why did you start your blog?

This started with the idea of being a Parenting Blog, from the fathers point of view – as I feel the ratio of Mothers to Fathers blogs is in favour of the ladies. But as I have no actual child or the idea of having one yet, I decided to set up a blog about Adulthood and me growing up becoming old and dealing with crap. Then by the time the children come along this blog with be up and running.

Pineapple on a pizza? Yay or nay?

Ooh controversial question – probably not going to like my answer. But damn son I love the Pineapple, on pizza, on chicken burgers, on gammon. It’s sweet, sour, juicy – what is not to love. Keep the pineapple going strong.

If you could turn any activity into an Olympic sport, what would you have a good chance at winning medal for?

This will sound soppy as SIN but I have always been told it, for like years, I give THE best hugs. Bring it on I would take home the gold.

What would you have for your dream three course dinner?

Now this might change but right now; Halloumi Fries with Chilli Jam, a beast of a Sirloin Steak (Rare) and to finish, a plain and simply tasty Vanilla Cheesecake. Not too shabby hey.

If you had unlimited funds to build a house that you would live in for the rest of your life, what would the finished house be like?

Now I am not greedy, I don’t need mansions or helipads. But you know the America Family Homes you see in films, where the Mom and Pop have the kids and grand kids over for Christmas dinner. The large open plan kitchen, dinning room, maybe two living rooms. Upstairs maybe four double bedrooms, a study, walk in wardrobes. The large bathroom with two sinks as the master bathroom. Double garage, large garden, decking area with outdoor furniture and a big BBQ grill.

Maybe it is sounding borderline mansion like, but I just want to be able to always host and have people stay. Y’all can come visit!

Are you usually early or late?

Early. It’s a big pet peeve being late. Sadly my GF has terrible time management and it drives me up the wall.

What would be your ideal way to spend the weekend?

Friday Night. Takeaway Pizza – Couple of Movies.

Saturday. Lounge, maybe a spot of shopping (in my favour though, none of this being dragged round Primark and Next for hours upon end, no sir), some Playstation. Then to a bar for a few drinks with some friends.

Sunday. A lay in, bacon and egg sandwich, then chilling with some binge TV or films. Just some chilled time.

What is something you think everyone should do at least once in their lives?

Make a list of 30 Before 30. It’s eye-opening, challenge yourself.

How different was your life one year ago?

The blog, less than a year old. It’s been a whirlwind and I love it. It has given me a place to express myself and meet some awesome people.

What is something that your friends would consider “so you”?

Hmm; I’d love to say my charm or comical genius. But it would probably be my film knowledge and intelligence – wow that sounded arrogant. But yeah film knowledge and actors is off the chain – Ross would know this, or Ross could tell you that.

I hope that’s the right answer, now I think about it is that “So Me”

If someone narrated your life, who would you want to be the narrator?

I would have to go with someone like Michael Caine or James Earl Jones – though I don’t think my life is exciting for his booming voice. Maybe Brian Blessed.

My Questions For You.

  • If you could see any Band or Musician that has sadly passed away who would you see?
  • What are your thoughts on Avocados?
  • What is your biggest pet peeve?
  • Would you rather have no hands or no feet?
  • We are going to form a band, what position would take?
  • What is the most influential quote you have in memory?
  • Which is scarier, Space or the Depths of the Ocean, and why?
  • What are your thoughts on the scandalous “Reality” TV shows, such as MADE IN blah blah or Real Housewives of who knows-where?
  • Morecambe and Wise or Two Ronnie’s?
  • If you could hang out with any Kids TV Character from your childhood who would it be?
  • What Animal would you be most excited to see at the Zoo?

Nominations.

This is the bit I dislike because it takes ages for me to decide who to tag (I want to tag you all) and then I have to find your info and remember to tag you in the tweet. But let’s go!

Avengers Infinity War – Non Spoiler review.

Comments 5 Standard

Wow!

Last night I watched The Avengers Infinity War and what can I say!

marvel-avengers-infinity-war-trailer-unpopular-opinion

So this post is spoiler free as I don’t want to ruin the experience for anyone, so stick with me here as I attempt to tiptoe around the story trying to give as much information as I can while also trying to not give you anything at the same time – and just like Hulks punch it is proving hard going.

I am lost for words. On first reflection it was slower than the first Avengers. I love the first one because it runs so smooth but I felt this one changed speed a few times. Which isn’t a bad thing because let’s be honest they have a lot going on. But it builds nicely and just works on an impressive scale.

newspic-72477

What can I say without saying anything. Thanos is a brilliant bad guy – the reasoning behind his motives is somewhat logical in a mad kind of way and even the character development for him was stunning. They have managed to create the character so well that you feel as much emotion for him as you do the others. The emotions might not be the same but they are there non the less.

The teams were brilliant. Bringing everyone together worked so well. The bolshie arrogance of Stark mixed with the comical humor of Star Lord was genius. Spider-Man was a great inclusion throwing his young spirited naivety, yet willing to prove himself into the mix worked just as well as it did in Civil War and they also pair other great unlikely characters up which was something we never knew we needed but now just want to see again – *Cough* Thor and Rocket *Cough*

I was left with a few niggles here and there but I’m going to let it set in for a few days and then come back to it and see how I feel about them. That I think is standard with big films like this and alot of people I have spoken to have said similar things, but that in no way takes anything away from the overall amazing specticle I witnessed.

The ending left me somewhat in two minds. I want one result but think it’s more likely the other thought is more realistic. But that doesn’t change the magnitude of the film and what it means for the overall MCU world – we have seen this universe build and grow for ten years and this film is such a pay off that it’s everything we have wanted and more.

AvengersInfinityWars

Today the office is a bubbling pot of excitement as everyone is talking about the film, the theories, the trauma. It’s going to be one of those films that will be talked about and dissected for years to come. Leaving questions like – What have I witnessed? Where do we go next? How will we come back from this? To the point where someone has made a google sheet to label questions and thoughts so we can all throw opinions and answers into the mix.

Overall all I can say is the hype and build up did it justice – it’s doesn’t let you down and is a MUST see. If you enjoy the Marvel films even a little bit you will love this one. It’s a long film but from the very start you are thrown into this world and left shocked that the time has vanished. You won’t want it to end and could sit through it all again. I am already planning my second viewing as I think a few watches are needed just to help digest the sheer awesomeness of this masterpiece.

Mentally prepare yourself – it’s a thrill ride and I promise you will love it!

Lost in Life.

Comments 21 Standard

I’m not sure where this post is going or what its even called.

(I assume the title above is fitting. But as I write this I have nothing planned)

Over the past day or so ive realised something about my self and my personality. Which is always dangerous to self criticise and evaluate yourself but I went there – and what I found made sense. It made me think about every past exploit and choice I’ve made.

My findings – I have no drive.

Wait what does that even mean. Now you are wondering. Where does he park his car? Or not. Sorry for the dad joke.

I mean Drive / Dedication / Motivation. So many times I have had an idea. Something new to look into. Usually job related. I do research and plans and then never go anywhere with it because I never follow it through.

The biggest one in my past is film making. I love it so much. I wanted to set up a production company and go freelance. All planned. Named. Cards printed. But just getting that umph to start it never appeared. Another example was setting up an etsy shop to sell Groomsmen gift boxes. Working out the costs and the realistic demand for it. But again after all that work put in – I did nothing with it.

Same again when it comes to writing scripts and even a children’s story book. I begin full of life and positivity and then let it fizzle out when it comes to commitment.

I think it boils down to a fear of the unknown. Leaving my stable reliable old job to take that plunge and go it alone. Risk that stability and just go for it. Scary right.

My latest idea in the planning stages (which will remain a secret for the moment) is a similar thing. I don’t think it will take off or amount to anything.

I’m lost. Left wondering the world unsure as to what I want to do when I grow up. Does anyone else get this? A sense of being lost and unsure.

I think of recently the only thing I have kept going is this blog and I’m still in the baby steps of this. Ideally I would love to get to a point where I can make this self-sufficient and make this my work and job.

One day hey.

Sorry for the rant / over sharing. But you know what they say. I’ll work it all out one day and it will be good.

Until then. Lets just smile and get on with it.

Peace ✌
