StrongMen – What is it and what it is doing.

Just so you know this if not an AD, the Charity didn’t come to me. I asked them if I could write about them to help spread the word of who they are.

As many of you might know recently I discovered Channel 4’s S.A.S Who Dares Wins. Which pits a team of average joe recruits through a version of the selection progress for the Special Forces, lead by a tough team of Directing Staff which is made up of Ex Special Forces Operatives; Ant Middleton, Jason Fox, Matthew Ollerton and Mark Billingham.

Each season highlights the recruits back stories and reasons for taking on such a challenge, and each season for me has a couple of people who really stand out with some truly emotionally touching stories. Earlier seasons showed me Ehrem’s story and the season just gone showed me Mark and Milo’s stories. All dealing with grief, loss and a drive to prove themselves in honour of their lost family members.

Obviously as the world is very social media driven I jumped on the bandwagon to follow both Mark and Milo on Instagram. Only to find out their relationship has continued after the show and they are embarking on a Charity Climb of Mont Blanc in July with Ollie Ollerton. All in the name of “StrongMen”. Which got me thinking, who are they?

StrongMen

StrongMen is a non-profit organisation set up by several Ex-Recruits and a D.S. from the show. Their mission, to tackle Mental Health issues caused by bereavement and suffering in men. Offering weekend retreats for Men aged 18-55 who have suffered a bereavement of a family member.

With grief and loss being one of the main causes to depression, stress and other such mental health issues the team at StrongMen have set up retreats to focus on several aspects of life; from diet, to exercise, to leisure activities – all with the goal of helping men open up and talk about their emotions and problems. Even if you are not effected by such things I strongly urge you to check out, look into this group and support the team at StrongMen.

Mental Health is an ever-growing concern in this modern world, as it becomes more widely recognised and accepted. There is still a stigma behind Men and their diagnoses but with the help of organisations like StrongMen we can move away from that stigma and make it socially acceptable to be worry free and open to discuss what is really going on in our mind.

Men can still be the strong characters they always have been, but there is also no shame or harm in being open about what is going on inside your head. Especially if it results in help.

With all of this new and fresh in my mind it’s really made me take a step back to evaluate my own personal mental health. The up’s, the downs and the vague patches in the middle. Evaluating my own thoughts and well-being has been on the forefront of a lot of discussions recently. Growing as a blogger I have had the pleasure of meeting and interacting with several Mental Health bloggers for both Men and Women and this has helped me dramatically change my opinion on the topic for the better.

IMG_20180121_224107_636I suffered a bereavement nearly four years ago now, where I lost my Mother. I was 24. It was the start of the summer and I was sat in a beer garden in Northampton with some friends. Just a standard evening of drinks after work to unwind. When I got a phone call. My sisters number, but it was my Dad on the phone. He broke the news to me that she had passed away. Regardless of my relationship with her it was still a shock and worse of all I couldn’t do anything to fix it. I couldn’t even drive the 70 mile trip home there and then because I was in a beer garden. Though I have always be a strong-minded character I think that deep down I have never properly grieved. I just took a deep breath and got on with making sure my sister was ok and putting my Mothers affairs in order as I organised a funeral. (My Parents were Divorced as this point, so power of the estate was in my hands).

I’d never thought about this as a contributing factor to my Mental Health before, but with life getting busier, Adulthood creeping in and responsibilities racking up that tower of Life begins to wobble and lean a bit from time to time. Maybe throwing “Money worries” “Frustration at work” and a dash of “Road Rage” into a pot on top of a ungrevied significant moment in my life isn’t a great move – but then on the flip side maybe I am at ease with it all and how I dealt with it was perfectly rational and understandable during that time in my life.

It is a serious discussion we should be having and with the help of organisations like StrongMen I truly believe that discussion will be taking place more frequently.

As much as I am no professional, I like to think I am a supportive guy who will help anyone, with that in mind – if you want to talk, open up or even just have the knowledge and thought that someone is there. Here I am. Don’t be shy.

I will always be there for you all.

This is it guys – Day 12. Blogmas for me is over. The 12 nights of Christmas have been amazing and fun as always. I firstly want to thank you all for the constant support, the love, the comments and the followings. I’ve loved this and I hope you have too. I hope I haven’t droned on too much. But hey, it is Christmas after all.

Remember that this time of year is amazing, beautiful and loving. A time to rejoice and celebrate all that is good in the world. Remember even in WW1 the soldiers stopped for a moment to come together as friends, play football and share the festive spirit. This is Christmas, the magic and power it has to bring people together. Enjoy this season, whatever you decide to do.

I ask of one thing though, take as many photos as possible! Create memories and just enjoy yourself.

I love you all! Merry Christmas to all and to all a Good Night!

This Grinch GIF is unrelated – I am not saying be a Grinch. I just liked the GIF and wanted to share it.

The Haunting of Hill House – The Review.

Comments 19 Standard

I am home, I am home, she thought; now to climb.

Recently I have been watching “The Haunting of Hill House”, or commonly known as, the Haunted House on the Hill, The Hill Haunting House, or that show that makes you poo your pants! For some reason everyone I have spoken to struggle to put the name together properly . . . maybe it’s the show that has scarred them too much.

Firstly I want to begin by saying this review will be a SPOILER FREE review. One because I don’t like being THAT guy and Two, because the show needs to be watched rather that told. I won’t be able to do it justice if I try to explain the ending, the twists and the resolution.

I went into the show, hearing so many people rave about it, sing its praises but also claim the nervous wrecks they became from it. Now horror films aren’t really my thing, I don’t think they are made these days with fear and horror in mind, but more to show special effect and a bucket full of fake blood. But I pushed on and jumped into this and wow I am so glad I did – I loved it! It is so much more than a horror show.

The premise of the show is about a family being haunted by mysterious supernatural forces within a house. The narrative jumps across about 30 years, from the family as kids moving into the house, to present day where they have all grown up in different ways after the ordeal of the house.

The main story revolves around 5 siblings who have all taken different paths in life after several traumatic experiences from their childhood. Showing different coping mechanisms from Drug Abuse, to Denial, to Over Compensation. I’ve read and agree with that each sibling in the show is a symbolic version of a step of Kubler-Ross “Five Stages of Grief” process. Which thinking back to how all the characters act and process their surroundings it becomes very obvious that theory could be spot on.

Another aspect of this show that I loved is the cinematography and the style of shots. Most memorably Episode Six which included an 17 minute long shot. Which is beautiful. Giving the desired impression that the single shot is happening in real-time. While choreographing swift and solid movement with the cast and set to not interrupt the shot. You will know the scene when you see it and afterwards just think “Wow” – I did.

Overall the show, the feel of it and the story is superb, gripping and captivating. Even with the scares involved. The true horror I think comes more from the depiction of Human Nature and how it reacts to unreasonable events, or events you logically can not make sense of.

Please go and watch it. I can not stress enough how much I enjoyed this show and how I want everyone to witness it. True horror making at it’s best.

Side note – after I had finished it, which I had started while moving into a new house (I know right), I had a small dose of paranoia set it, I found myself standing in the empty spare bedroom in the dark one morning getting ready for work, thinking about the end of the show and what it all meant. But the more I thought about it, the more my mind began to play tricks on me with sounds and imaginations of what could be behind me. Silly I know but I put this down to how good the show was, the idea and story stuck with me and played on my mind so much that I felt it could be real.

One final tidbit that I learnt when I was on about episode nine was from an article I read about the show and the missing ghosts. Take a read over HERE – I can’t promise it is spoiler free, but I can promise shock, this article goes into explaining how the show has ghosts all through it but you just don’t notice them because you don’t know where to look. The sheer amount of detail the show runners put into this is amazing. They knocked it out of the park and I for one love that.

Anyway enough of my ramblings, it’s Friday night. Pop Netflix on and start this show. You will not be disappointed.

Have a great weekend boys and girls  . . . . if you survive that long.

  • Display the award
  • Thank the person who nominated you, and post a link to their blog
  • Answer the questions they have written for you
  • Nominate other bloggers and give them three questions to answer, all in the name of sharing unity within the blogging community.

I love doing these kind of posts and I have to thank Leighann from WithLoveLeighann who I’ve only just recently found in the Blogger Community, not sure how or why it took me so long, she is a lovely, friendly girl with passion and comedy to spare. Check out her blog and twitter @LeighannLeAnn

My Answers

  • What is the best comment, you have received about your blog/blogging, since you started. – I try to save all the comments I get so I had a couple to pick from. (Sadly I forgot to record who said what . . . )

screenshot_2018-05-29-15-04-58

  • If you could write about one thing ( that you haven’t yet) what would it be? Tough one because if I feel strongly about something I will write about it. I guess Parenting – Being a Daddy. That is the reason this blog started. I haven’t done it yet because I don’t have no child. But one day.

  • Where do you get your creative inspiration from? I struggle at times, I struggle to juggle work, spare time, blog time and life. So when I want to make something like this really big I need to big down deep to find something to push and make me focus. Creative just flows, I have always been a creative person – it’s just finding the drive to put those creative juices into action.

My Questions

  1. In the past 6 months what is one thing that has surprised you about yourself?
  2. What is the best life hack you have ever seen?
  3. If you could wake up tomorrow with the skills to play any sport or instrument what would it be and why?

My Nominations

Firstly who ever reads this, you are nominated. Doesn’t matter if your name is on the list or not, you are more picked. Feel free to take this and run with it.

Man Vs Movies: Top Five All Time Favourite Films

Comments 10 Standard

Copy of Insert Catchy Film Series Title

Greetings and Welcome to my new series, the wonderfully captivating and excellently funny “Man Vs Movies” and today’s topic – Top Five All Time Favourite Films.

I want to firstly thank everyone for suggesting names and ideas for this series. I ran a poll on twitter and “Man Vs Movies” took off and flew into the lead. I liked it, you liked it. So here we are!

I am also going to run a poll after posting the latest post to decide what genre to host the following week. I’ve also had a list of new topics and suggests from you lovely people, so they will be in the mix soon. I am really looking forward to this. I hope you are too and I can’t wait for more feedback and support.

Disclaimer on all the lists you will find and see in this series, they are subject to change. What makes the list today, might be cut in 6 months time, they are fluid and ever-growing. But the premise is the same and at time of posting the lists will be accurate. Also they are Top Fives but not in an order. It’s hard enough to whittle films down to five, let alone rank them afterwards.

Die Hard.die_hard.jpg

It’s Christmas Eve and humble policeman John is visiting his family in L.A. But the festivities are ruined when Hans and his gang of baddies crash the party. But John has every intention of saving Christmas and his Wife.

Anyone that knows me, knows this is my all time favourite film and also THE greatest Christmas film of all time. Yes it has it’s faults (Vest colours) but it also has everything you want in an action film. Cool one liners, great action scenes and the warm feeling of family at Christmas.

This film catapulted Bruce Willis into the Action Hero status he has today and what a guy he is.

Image result for brick movie posterBrick.

This film takes the magic and mystery of the Film Noir from the Golden Era of Cinema. But throws them into a modern high school environment. Imagine Humphrey Bogart skipping class and smoking on the football field. This film is that.

A very cleverly told story about a boy called Brendon who is looking for his missing girlfriend, he begins to unravel the dirty underworld of drugs and as he goes deeper down the rabbit hole more and more truths and horrors come out.

It stars the ever so talented Joseph Gordon Levitt and is directed by Rian Johnson who has gone on to do Star Wars and a few ep’s of Breaking Bad. It’s such a smart film that flew under the radar and really deserves a lot more attention and praise.

Fear and Loathing.Image result for fear and loathing in las vegas movie poster

This mad, wild, drug fuelled semi biographical film follows writer Hunter S. Thompson and his attorney as they travel from L.A to Las Vegas to cover a sporting event and end up getting super high and just pushing a mass bender as far as they can.

Johnny Depp fully immersed himself in the role. To the point where he befriend and lived with the Hunter for months to learn how to mimic his personality and mannerisms. It’s a strange little film that has poetic echos and undertones about the American Dream, society and the political status of the country. It might take a couple of watches to fully understand and appreciate the film but I highly rate it.

All you can do is “Buy the Ticket, Take the Ride” and enjoy the antics along the way. Imagine like an R rated version of the Hangover but with a lot more psychedelic drugs, a circus and a lobby full of reptiles.

Pulp Fiction Movie PosterPulp Fiction.

Say WHAT again I dare you, I double dare you!

This should be no surprise to anyone, this is probably on everyone’s Top Five list. It’s an instant classic from the bizarre mind of Tarantino. It’s hard to explain what the film is about as it runs several storylines over a non linear narrative but it just works so well.

Everything about it screams amazing, from the script and dialogue, to the soundtrack and the actors involved. It’s one of those films that has it all and doesn’t hold back. Covering topics like drugs, boxing, gangsters and hillbillies, this film doesn’t hold back. It’s truly the five dollar shake of the milkshake world.

Room (2015 film).pngRoom.

The final entry is relatively new in comparison, not to be mistaken for “The Room” (the worst movie ever made – officially) but “Room” follows the story of a Girl, Joy / Ma, who is kidnapped and held captive for seven years in this single box room. Where her captor fathers a son and when we first meet him he is five.

The first half of the film is set purely in the room. Following Jack the son, as this is all he knows, he has never been outside, never seen the ocean, never seen a dog in real life. The second half follows the two captives readjusting to the real world, the ordeals and struggles they face as Joy tries to normalise and Jack tries to understand this new world.

It’s a fantastic story that covers so many different emotional points and social points. With both Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay giving amazing top-notch, oscar award-winning performances. It’s not light-hearted but very much worth the watch. I promise.

How does my Top 5 hold up? Any you haven’t seen? Any you don’t agree with? What is your top five? I’d love to know.

How did this post go? Fun? I hope so. Check out the poll on my twitter to decide the next topic.

Peace!

A Neat Blog Award for a Neat Guy!

real_neat_blogger_award

I want to thank all my fans and family and the barista in Starbucks for this award, it means so much to me and my world is complete.

My thanks go out to G over on 16bitdad – who if you don’t follow him (and you should) he runs a pretty awesome parenting and retro gaming blog. Mixing life tales of child proofing and moving house with articles on the worst Video Game Films and reviews on Welsh Horrors that I had never even heard of. Such a good blog and such an awesome helpful guy.

THE RULES

  • Put the award label on your blog.
  • Thank the people who nominated you and link to their blogs.
  • Answer the 7 questions asked by the person who nominated you.
  • Nominate any number of bloggers you like, include links to their blogs (and ask them 7 questions).
  • Let them know you nominated them (by commenting on their blog or twitter etc)

THE QUESTIONS

Well then, the time has come for me to pass on this award and bring attention to some other bloggers! But first, let’s take a look at the 7 questions that those bloggers will need to answer:

  • What does blogging mean to you and has this changed since you first started?
    • To me blogging is an output, a way to document life and record development, but since starting and joining some amazing groups and communities it now also means friendship and support, both getting and giving. It’s crazy to see how many people appreciate what I have to say and listen or even ask for help.
  • What was the biggest mistake you made with your blog?
    • I would probably say starting my format over on WIX and the moving to WordPress – in no disrespect to WIX, they were great. But I think the change meant almost starting again in regards to building a following. But we live and learn.
  • If you could change one thing about your blog, what would it be?
    • Knowledge. I wish I knew more on SEO and the Jargon that comes with the technical side of things, I think developing that skill will help progress my blog.
  • How do you come up with your blog’s post ideas?
    • I literally just write what comes into my head, regardless of the sensitivity of the topic. If it effects or bothers me so much I feel the need to air my thoughts then I will. Or I will just make up a topic and watch it develop.
  • Which other blogs do you read the most?
    • Upon reading this my mind has just gone blank. I can’t think of a name or page of the top of my head. Oh no! Try THIS ONE, and THIS oh and HERE
    • Bit of mystery there of who they belong too, three very talented and delightfully amazing ladies, Maud, Jess and Abbie – all loveable, insightful and well worth the follow.
  • What is your biggest blogging pet peeve?
    • The Follow / Unfollow game! A sneaky cheeky way to up stats and figures. Which is just fickle, I try to talk to my followers. There is some awesome people out there. There is no need to Follow/ Like something / Then Unfollow.
  • What’s the most embarrassing thing you have done whilst trying to get imagery or content for your blog?
    • I did a post about Bras and the equality in the female market. Which can be read HERE – but if you notice the top image I put together myself but it did involved searching the internet for Stock Files of Women in Bras which opened the internet up to showing me similar stuff – only to then have my GF walk in and ask “What the hell am I looking at?” – It made sense in the end, but she thought I was being very casual with porn. #Awkward

NOMINATION TIME.

Eeny Meeny Miny Moe I pick:

  • My main man Matt over here . . . HELLO
  • The splendidly lovely Issy Belle . . . BOOM
  • Directly picking Laura . . . CHECK IT
  • And newly acquainted Em Bumble . . . TA-DAH

Your challenge if you choose to accept it and my golly I hope you do. Is to answer these gems!

MY QUESTION.

  1. How have you found your Blogging journey so far?
  2. If you could host a meetup event for you and your blogger pals, what would you do and where?
  3. If you had all the skills in the world so anything was possible what else would you run a blog about?
  4. Imagine you have invented THE best new gadget that could help everyone, what is it and what does it do?
  5. You have the power to make one wish, it could be as big and world-changing or as little as matching your socks up. (Can’t wish for more wishes) What would you wish for?
  6. What is your blog origin story? What gamma radiation hiccup brought you to here?
  7. A mad man is holding the world hostage and the only way to stop him is for you to give up a sense (Touch, Sight, Smell, Taste or Hearing) which would you give up and why? (I know that is very implausible and silly, but we like silly)

Now off you pop, do the post, I can not wait to read these and get some more insight into who you really are. I am sure it’s all good.

And to finish off have a photo of me “Hulk Smashing” the pavement. Just cause really!
