Happy Anniversary!

We’ve been together a year now. Started seeing each other in September but October 11th we became official. I told all my friends about you. Share photos of us on Instagram and started to make many memories.

We’ve bought new people into our relationship, met some great friends and loved every minute of things. Even the dark times where we wouldn’t talk for a week or so. We worked through it, we have become stronger and still as much in love as when we first started.

List

My main thank you, is to you guys, the readers, the followers, the friends I have made. This year has been amazing and I have loved what we have made here. I can’t wait to see it grow, to get better and even more awesome.

Honestly I never thought when I first started that I would have met such inspirations and amazing people such as: Maud, Abbie, Lauren – and then the #BlogVengers; Colin, Gareth, Elle, Annie. These are to name a few – I could go on forever naming all the gems in this blogging world. Basically if you are reading this, you are one of them! I am so thankful! I also want to thank the brands who have trusted me and given me the chance to work with them to promote their amazing brands. I have loved every chance I have had.

To the next year!

Man Vs Movies – Venom Review.

Eyes! Lungs! Pancreas! So many snacks, so little time!

This review will have two time zones in one post. This is exciting right. Currently as I write this it is 14.01pm on the 3rd (Yes today is October 3rd) and tonight we are going to go and watch Venom. But I wanted to do a brief bit before watching it because of the storm Twitter and Rotten Tomatoes have stirred up regarding how good. . . or how bad this film is.

Firstly I want to start by saying in regards to film reviews and reviewers I do not trust the words of two sources; one being Rotten Tomatoes because it’s built off the back of Joe Bloggs opinion and as we know, people behind a keyboard become a troll and just taint everything, plus film is art and art is subjective. The second source I don’t trust is Mark Kermode. But more about him another time.

Let me start by saying (as you might know) I am a big Marvel fan. I love most of the films regardless of what studio is making what and so when Venom got announced I was pretty excited for it. A cool twist on the Villain we know from the 90’s cartoon and with Tom Hardy at the helm what is not to love. In honesty I am hoping for a dark film, along the lines of Logan or Deadpool with the adult content and dark humour. Though with it being a 15 it might end up being slightly tamer. But still I am excited to see what they do and having Tom Hardy and Woody Harrelson involved (which both I rate highly) what can go wrong. See you shortly.

Good Evening – Told you, two time zones. It is now 22.02pm on that faithful October 3rd and I have just got home from seeing Venom.

Ok in three words; Not That Bad!

Obviously it is hard going into a film when you have heard nothing but bad things about it. But here I am. I enjoyed it. I thought they have made a good start and can see it growing into a pretty neat franchise. I think it needs a night to sink in and settle but as a film it was fun. It’s no MCU film admittedly but they have their stuff down. It’s like an X2 standard of film. It’s good, it has heart and potential – let’s just hope they don’t follow with a Last Stand style Venom and cock it all up.

Tom Hardy was, as always a delight. Charming, funny and badass all rolled up into his normal deadly teddy bear persona. He nailed Eddie Brock, his personality and his coping mechanisms towards Venom were brilliant. Which per the review I have to agree with – their chemistry and relationship was perfect, that slightly mad, voices in your head style bickering was spot on. Sadly I mentioned Woody Harrelson up their and without spoiler it, his part is brief. But in true Woody style it was great.

Related imageThe story had a few plot holes and a few questions or solutions that seemed to be overlooked but that is a given now days in many films so I wont dwell on that part.

Overall I thought it was a good bit of fun, a great Saturday night chilled movie. You know the type – get the gang over, grab some snacks and throw this film on. It didn’t drag, it just flowed nicely. I would recommend giving it a whirl. Also as always keep an eye out for the Stan Lee cameo. This one was smart with a cool quip that he throws at our duo.

I am very interested to see what happens next and I do hope they green light a sequel. Watch this space because I can see it growing into some kind of dark guilty pleasure. Forget what you have heard, heck even forgot this review. Go in with an open mind and no expectations and just enjoy the movie. As always boys, girls and true believers thank you for stopping by, thank you for listening and thank you for being you!

So it has been just over a week since Spider-Man swung onto our screens and it’s been one hell of a week for PlayStation Fans.

Firstly let me say I am hooked, I am in love and I am amazed at what they have made – A fully immersive, free roam, open world game playing as the webslinger himself.

According to the stat bar I am approximately 50% through the game, but story wise I don’t feel like I am very far at all. Something is coming but I can’t work out what. Maybe because I have done so many side bits is the reason the percentage is so high. Regardless I’ve put some hours into it and it shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

The story line is set X amount of years after the origin on Spidey – there is no spider bite, uncle ben, or a coming of age tale. Pete has been Spidey for a while, he knows what he is doing. Honestly I am glad they took this approach – we all know the origins we don’t need to see it again. Pete is just a normal bloke, trying to pay rent, working a low paid job, oh and fighting crime as the wallcrawler. Just another day in the life hey.

The game play and dynamics are breathtaking, the ability to interact with the environment and open world is amazing. Imagine that feeling you got when Assassins Creed first came out and you were allowed to free run anywhere. It is like that and then some. Throw web slinging into the mix and this game is unstoppable.

Making Spider-Man yours! The game has a tonne of features and combinations that make up how and who you play as. Starting off with Suit selections, there are 27 to pick from and unlock throughout the game; from the original suit, to the Iron Spider from Infinity Wars, to the more ridiculous suits like; Spirit Spider, Undies Suit & Vintage Comic Book Suit. All the suits have their own perks and powers that they bring to the table. Which once unlocked you can trade between suits. Then we get into gadgets, web shooters and suit mods. Which I can’t start to list because I am still unlocking them and playing about with finding the perfect combo that suits me. But again you can mix and match the whole lot.

When I first began and got into fights I was worried that the system would get very repetitive – I was so very wrong. The more you unlock, upgrade and learn new moves. The more each fight is different, fun and intense.

Currently I am running around in the Spider Punk suit – in his sleeveless denim jacket and red converse shoes, it reminds me of my youth. I have the Web Blossom Super Power attached which after ranking up focus, I can do a special move where Spidey jumps into the air, spins and fires multiple webs at once, sticking everyone to everything. It’s so much fun.

img_20180908_135429_868

The Bigger Picture – the world is massive and the links to other Marvel characters is just as big. I guessed there would be nods to things along the way but it wasn’t until I stumbled across Doctor Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum that I knew this would be big. I set out to find more quirks and references; Avengers Tower, Alias Investigations, Rand Industries are just to name a few. That and the cheeky Stan Lee cameo. You can’t miss it.

One word of warning though. Be prepared to see time just vanish. I jumped on the other night with 20mins to kill. Thinking I will just swing about and have some fun. An hour later I realised I was late to leave. This game will swallow time. But it is so worth it.

The story and game is just fun, all out, spandex pinging fun. If you are either working on the main story, hunting for backpacks or just admiring the world swinging through the streets, whatever it is you will be having fun doing it. I can not express the joy and awe this brings me. This is before we even mention Photo Mode. Imagine Instagram on steroids – the function is crazy full of filters, banners, stickers and a quirky cool selfie mode. Here are some examples!

Overall I love it, it’s so much fun! Let me know what you think, if you have played it, or if this has sold you to go out and buy a copy. I would love to know.

If you have liked this review also let me know as I might do more . . . Red Dead 2 is out next month.

Jack Ryan Review Part 1.

Leave a comment Standard

“I’m just an Analyst”

Last friday Amazon Prime Video released the full season of Jack Ryan – the latest interpretation of Tom Clancy’s C.I.A hero.

For a few months now I had been excited to give this a try, it looked right up my street. Gun’s, Action, Spy Stuff, Drama and even the trailer had me hooked by the use of the song Human by Rag n Bone Man. Which is a song I’ve been loving recently.

So yesterday lunchtime at work I decided to start. I’d held off starting this as I was finishing Last Chance U on Netflix (which is brilliant if you get a chance). So with that over I was ready to start this one.

The first episode titled ‘Pilot’ was just over an hour-long but it set the story and show up in superb fashion. Introducing Jack, a low-level analyst in the financial team of the C.I.A. – in the first few scenes with Jack we learn so much about him, finding out he was in the Army, he had back problems, he rows and he has a vast general knowledge which is shown as he answers quiz show questions while eating his dinner.

He is set up perfectly.

We watch as he investigates money transactions in Yemen and comes across a potential threat who is assumed to big the next Bin Laden. After much deliberation Jack and his boss Greer end up at an Army Black Site in Yeman interrogating a money man and his bodyguard who have links to the mysterious account.

I hope this first part has gripped up, because I don’t really want to continue plotting the show out. As it stands we are roughly 3/4’s of the way into the pilot now. But so much more happens throughout the episode that just keeps up gripped and on the edge of your seat. I did three episodes last night and intend on doing another few today. (Heck by the time you read this I could be up to episode 5 or 6).

The layers of the story are immensely inviting and intriguing – opening you up to almost like and side with each character, while also being left with a strange untrusting feeling as you ponder what their next move is.

I can’t sneaky off and wrap this up without mention John Krasinski who plays Jack Ryan. We know John from the American Office as the goofy, geeky, loveable Jim. Then POW he got shreaded for “13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi”, then he went and made “A Quiet Place” which were both amazing pieces of work and now he is here. This man’s talent is ever growing and any excuse to showcase a new skill and he is jumping at the chance which I love. Good job John.

Even the feel and look of the show is beautiful, even when it’s not working with the fantastic action scenes, fire and gunshots – we also get stunning scenic shots, aerial panoramic shots and cityscapes which just add icing and a cherry to the top of the well made, well enjoyed and very tasty cake.

So go, watch, let me finish watching and once we are both done I will do another review which will be bigger and spoiler filled. This will be fun. Enjoy it, it’s a must.

Please note I am not being paid for this, AMAZON have not asked me to promote their show or service. I am just a fan sharing and caring.

Man Vs Movies – Top Five Comedy Films

fantasy

I used to have a job at a calendar factory but I got the sack because I took a couple of days off.

This week is Comedy week, you know those films that you can watch over and over again, regardless of the situation – get home drunk, sling this on, bored and feeling down, this is a go to pick. Comedies are the best genre that you can sling on for easy watching.

SLAPPAA DA BASS!

This films follows Peter, a newly engaged estate agent who has to find a best man for his wedding. As a man with very few friends, Peter has some ups and downs until he finds the one! It features some Canadian rock n roll, some cheesy one liners and the Hulk.

AnchormanAnchorman

60% of the time, it works every time.

Following the number one news team in San Diego, Anchorman is a story of change and equality as the first female news anchor joins the team. Which does not go down well with the men in the current team. Which brings on a battle of the sexes.

Down as one of the most quotable movies

Tropic Thunder (2008)Tropic Thunder

I’m the dude, playing the dude, disguised as another dude.

A team of actors playing G.I.’s for a war movie are dropped into the wilderness for a sense a realism. Until they come across a real drug tribe. Still under the impression they are actors the team have to adapt and come to terms with the situation they are in.

Image result for shaun of the dead movie posterShaun of the Dead

Oh, she’s engaged. – That was quick.

A duo of normal working London lads wake up from a messy night to discover things aren’t what they were and there has been a Z-Word outbreak (we are not using the Z-Word), so fuelled by love, a want to survive and the opportunity to find a place to smoke they set off to collect family and friends as they head off to the pub (classic British attitude right).

The Hangover Movie PosterThe Hangover

It’s not a purse its a satchel Indiana Jones has one.

The one night guys love about wedding planning – the Stag Do and in this case, the lad’s head off to Vegas for a classy evening, steak dinner and a bit of gambling. But suddenly they wake up to find the hotel room trashed, no memory of what happened and the Groom missing. The group have to remember, investigate and find the groom to get back for the wedding.

Hilarity ensues.

I know all of these are pretty new, modern comedies but I just love them all – don’t get me wrong. I love the old school ones too; Brewster’s Millions, The Carry On Series, Trading Places, Airplane. Anything by Mel Brooks. But these ones just pipped it for me as a – I can watch anytime anywhere kind of thing.

What do you think? What is your go to comedy? What makes you chuckle?

Don’t turn around, Don’t go into the cabin alone and always, always for the love of god turn the lights on when you walk in the room.

This week is HORROR week. Muhuhahahaha.

Get In On These GET OUT Posters From Mondo | Birth.Movies.Death.Get Out

This little flick SHOOK the world in 2017 when it came out and wowed us all.

Following a Black Man meeting his White girlfriends family for the first time, there is a constant underlying race attitude that creeps through the whole film. I can’t really go into what happens or even why it happens but I can say the tension created, the feel of the movie and the acting all add up to make one masterpiece that personally I felt was wronged at the Oscars.

Amazingly there are two stories going on at once, the man story of the man dealing with the family and then a side story of the man’s friend who begins to worry about him. While one story is dark, horrific and scary the other one brings a light aspect of comedy to a dark harrowing film which works perfectly.

The tones and subject of the film is the scariest bit, it echos reality so well and makes you come to terms with society as we know it and the idea that actually we might be living in the horror film. If you have not seen it – please please please go and check it out.

The Quiet Place

A very new entry to this list, only being a few months old this film instantly became a hit in my eyes.

Following a Family trying to survive from an unknown monster threat that hunts using sound. Resulting in the family having to remain silent for the majority of the movie. Que tension and suspense from silence – they way this movie works is pure genius. Showing the lengths you would go to protect the ones you love, adjusting to a dramatic change in life and also trying to teach children how to adapt without freaking them out with the truth.

There are some amazingly beautiful sweet moments in this film of the family, the relationships they have and how this situation might seem to be tearing them apart but is actually making them stronger by the effects of what they do to survive.

Scream PosterScream

Scream is in my eyes an instant cult classic. Taking the Genre of the Slasher movie and making it self-aware. When this came out, it was modern, new, fresh. We had seen Halloween and Friday 13th – but this time round the victims knew of Horror Films and were aware of what you should do to avoid being caught.

As a Slasher film based around another Slasher film the world just works, it’s scary but relatable with the key scene at a party where the group talk about the rules to surviving a horror movie.

It’s a great bit of fun, with some tense moments a twists that keep coming for you like a madman with a knife in the night.

Split Movie PosterSplit

I don’t know if you agree with me but to me, M Night Shyamalan started off so strong and then his films just went down hill. Until Split came out. This one hit hard and took him back to his roots of amazing filmmaking.

Following a man with multiple personalities as he kidnaps three girls to use as tribute to “The Beast” – the film takes twists and turns and just keeps you on edge the whole time. With some amazing acting from James McAvoy who seamlessly creates personalities for all the characters he is playing.

Then to throw in the ever more surprising cameo from Bruce (the legend) Willis turning this film into an indirect sequel for Unbreakable. Now with a third film set be released throwing the two movies together – can’t wait.

Jeepers Creepers Movie PosterJeepers Creepers

This one made my list for the memory of it more than anything – if you know the film you might agree with what I have to say.

The first half / two-thirds of the film is brilliant, scary, horrific. Two teens driving home witness a figure dumping what looks like a body in a drain and then drive off in a big old dirty truck. Like classic American High schoolers they decide to investigate. To find a room down the drain pipe were the walls and ceiling is cover and decorated with human bodies, skin and remains. Chilling right.

They decide to leave, then the film turns into a cat and mouse game as the truck starts to follow them. Throw in some creepy musics (Jeepers Creepers), some more spooky goings on and the fear and you have a great movie. . . . until the kids are confronts by the figure, revealing he is a creepy looking monster. (This is still ok in my eyes) They run away and end up running him over – cool, creepy vanish would work now. But no, the filmmakers decide to add a new element that ruins the whole film for me. They turn this creepy figure into a bat! Tension builds as they see the body laying on the floor, crushed and mangled – then POW a Wing appears. The rest of the film goes downhill as it goes from the tense scary horror of an unknown figure dumping bodies and driving a truck, to being chased by a giant bat.

Such a shame.

But the first part super scary and I stand by it. Do you know what I mean? Do you agree?

Have you survived this post? No bites or claw marks right? Just remember when you go to sleep – to check under your bed. As always boys and girls this has been a spooky pleasure. Until next week – if you make it to then. . . . .

Man Vs Movies – Top Five Fantasy Films

fantasy.jpg

I’ve stumbled across a map, X marks the spot and the jewels are waiting, hidden in the vase in some dusty attic.

It’s Fantasy week!

I had a top five picked out but the more I thought about it the more I thought, Fantasy is a HUGE genre.

Indiana Jones Poster Last Crusade HD WallpapersIndiana Jones – The Last Crusade

I have always loved the Indiana Jones trilogy (we don’t talk about the Crystal Skull) and they were a big part of my growing up, at one point I wanted to become an archeologist just like our lovable rouge Indy.

But truth be told the real reason the Last Crusade wins is simply because of one charmingly dashing Scott – Sean Connery. Playing Indy’s father he brings a new level to Fords character as we watch the two play off each other in such a dynamic duo.

Following the hunt for the Holy Grail, this film ticks all Adventure Fantasy boxes in my head. Action, Humour, Good vs Evil and booby Traps.

There was also a family story, that the Tank Indy fights on near the end, was my dad’s uncle Ted’s tractor that the studio bought of him, stripped and repurposed into a tank. I never asked how much truth was in this – but the whole family were in on this. Hmmm.

Lord of the Rings – The Two Towers

Can’t have a genre like this without throwing something from Jackson’s catalogue of masterpiece Tolkien films. For me LOTR beat the Hobbit set (even though it’s slightly dated now days) and within those three – all are amazing in their own right but for me the second instalment wins and let’s be honest, that is because of the Battle of Helms Deep.

But also as story, I think the 2nd of a trilogy is very important. It’s got the biggest job of linking the two bookends, picking up from the first with such momentum that it can carry itself , while building the cliffhanger and suspense for the final piece.

Two Towers does that and so much more. Bringing key characters, plots and arcs into the Middle Earth world. With amazing action sequences, brilliant character chemistry and just opening up the vast fantasy world of Tolkien. This film and the whole franchise are a must.

Pirates of the Caribbean – Curse of the Black Pearl

Savvy pick hey! I really enjoy the Pirate films, Captain Jack Sparrow is such a fun character and Johnny Depp plays him so well.

Following the antics on the seven seas, this film introduces us to the world of pirates, ghosts, ships and swagger.  As the story focuses on cursed Aztec gold – which leaves a crew invincible but ghostly and stuck longing to be free. It has everything that you expect, swashbuckling fights, sun soaked locations, witty one liners and rum, lots and lots of rum.

Yes the franchise is still going and yes maybe they should have stopped a couple of films back, but regardless I love them all – they are just fun easy going films and without a doubt the first easily earn’t a space on this list.

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

Little fact for you, this is the first and only film I ever downloaded (in the naughty sense). Because I was so excited to watch this film, bringing awesome literacy character together in one stylish gothic noir style world what is not to love.

Following Allan Quatermain, The Invisible Man, Mina Harker, Tom Sawyer, Captain Nemo, Dorian Grey and Jekyll/Hyde as they team up to face a new world terrorist on the turn of the century. The Phantom who turns out to be James Moriarty the villainous arch-enemy of Sherlock Holmes.

The film itself got panned and in turn didn’t generate enough interest or money for a sequel but I none the less loved it, the casting, the sets, the way they bought these characters together was amazing. I guess it’s a guilty pleasure but one I highly recommend people see.

The Mummy (1999) PG-13 - "Death is only the beginning."The Mummy

Not the Tom Cruise surprise but the 1999 version with Brandon Fraser.

As a kid this was also one of those films that, if it was on – regardless of where it was in the film I could put it on and enjoy it. After a group of archaeologists accidentally wake a cursed priest mummy who is hell-bent on bringing his bride back to life to rule the world, our heroes have to set out across Egypt to find a way to stop him and bring peace back to the world.

If you like shotgunning the undead, over the top humour, cool dark arts and just some awesome fantasy fun. This is the one for you! Nothing too serious, just some easy-going fun.

Thank you for another spellbound, knife wielding fun old post. What do you think of my picks? Is there something that should be on the list? What is your list?

Don’t forget to like and share this post and also vote for the next genre.

Always a pleasure!
