So it has been just over a week since Spider-Man swung onto our screens and it’s been one hell of a week for PlayStation Fans.

Firstly let me say I am hooked, I am in love and I am amazed at what they have made – A fully immersive, free roam, open world game playing as the webslinger himself.

According to the stat bar I am approximately 50% through the game, but story wise I don’t feel like I am very far at all. Something is coming but I can’t work out what. Maybe because I have done so many side bits is the reason the percentage is so high. Regardless I’ve put some hours into it and it shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

The story line is set X amount of years after the origin on Spidey – there is no spider bite, uncle ben, or a coming of age tale. Pete has been Spidey for a while, he knows what he is doing. Honestly I am glad they took this approach – we all know the origins we don’t need to see it again. Pete is just a normal bloke, trying to pay rent, working a low paid job, oh and fighting crime as the wallcrawler. Just another day in the life hey.

The game play and dynamics are breathtaking, the ability to interact with the environment and open world is amazing. Imagine that feeling you got when Assassins Creed first came out and you were allowed to free run anywhere. It is like that and then some. Throw web slinging into the mix and this game is unstoppable.

Making Spider-Man yours! The game has a tonne of features and combinations that make up how and who you play as. Starting off with Suit selections, there are 27 to pick from and unlock throughout the game; from the original suit, to the Iron Spider from Infinity Wars, to the more ridiculous suits like; Spirit Spider, Undies Suit & Vintage Comic Book Suit. All the suits have their own perks and powers that they bring to the table. Which once unlocked you can trade between suits. Then we get into gadgets, web shooters and suit mods. Which I can’t start to list because I am still unlocking them and playing about with finding the perfect combo that suits me. But again you can mix and match the whole lot.

When I first began and got into fights I was worried that the system would get very repetitive – I was so very wrong. The more you unlock, upgrade and learn new moves. The more each fight is different, fun and intense.

Currently I am running around in the Spider Punk suit – in his sleeveless denim jacket and red converse shoes, it reminds me of my youth. I have the Web Blossom Super Power attached which after ranking up focus, I can do a special move where Spidey jumps into the air, spins and fires multiple webs at once, sticking everyone to everything. It’s so much fun.

img_20180908_135429_868

The Bigger Picture – the world is massive and the links to other Marvel characters is just as big. I guessed there would be nods to things along the way but it wasn’t until I stumbled across Doctor Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum that I knew this would be big. I set out to find more quirks and references; Avengers Tower, Alias Investigations, Rand Industries are just to name a few. That and the cheeky Stan Lee cameo. You can’t miss it.

One word of warning though. Be prepared to see time just vanish. I jumped on the other night with 20mins to kill. Thinking I will just swing about and have some fun. An hour later I realised I was late to leave. This game will swallow time. But it is so worth it.

The story and game is just fun, all out, spandex pinging fun. If you are either working on the main story, hunting for backpacks or just admiring the world swinging through the streets, whatever it is you will be having fun doing it. I can not express the joy and awe this brings me. This is before we even mention Photo Mode. Imagine Instagram on steroids – the function is crazy full of filters, banners, stickers and a quirky cool selfie mode. Here are some examples!

Overall I love it, it’s so much fun! Let me know what you think, if you have played it, or if this has sold you to go out and buy a copy. I would love to know.

If you have liked this review also let me know as I might do more . . . Red Dead 2 is out next month.

Jack Ryan Review Part 1.

Leave a comment Standard

“I’m just an Analyst”

Last friday Amazon Prime Video released the full season of Jack Ryan – the latest interpretation of Tom Clancy’s C.I.A hero.

For a few months now I had been excited to give this a try, it looked right up my street. Gun’s, Action, Spy Stuff, Drama and even the trailer had me hooked by the use of the song Human by Rag n Bone Man. Which is a song I’ve been loving recently.

So yesterday lunchtime at work I decided to start. I’d held off starting this as I was finishing Last Chance U on Netflix (which is brilliant if you get a chance). So with that over I was ready to start this one.

The first episode titled ‘Pilot’ was just over an hour-long but it set the story and show up in superb fashion. Introducing Jack, a low-level analyst in the financial team of the C.I.A. – in the first few scenes with Jack we learn so much about him, finding out he was in the Army, he had back problems, he rows and he has a vast general knowledge which is shown as he answers quiz show questions while eating his dinner.

He is set up perfectly.

We watch as he investigates money transactions in Yemen and comes across a potential threat who is assumed to big the next Bin Laden. After much deliberation Jack and his boss Greer end up at an Army Black Site in Yeman interrogating a money man and his bodyguard who have links to the mysterious account.

I hope this first part has gripped up, because I don’t really want to continue plotting the show out. As it stands we are roughly 3/4’s of the way into the pilot now. But so much more happens throughout the episode that just keeps up gripped and on the edge of your seat. I did three episodes last night and intend on doing another few today. (Heck by the time you read this I could be up to episode 5 or 6).

The layers of the story are immensely inviting and intriguing – opening you up to almost like and side with each character, while also being left with a strange untrusting feeling as you ponder what their next move is.

I can’t sneaky off and wrap this up without mention John Krasinski who plays Jack Ryan. We know John from the American Office as the goofy, geeky, loveable Jim. Then POW he got shreaded for “13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi”, then he went and made “A Quiet Place” which were both amazing pieces of work and now he is here. This man’s talent is ever growing and any excuse to showcase a new skill and he is jumping at the chance which I love. Good job John.

Even the feel and look of the show is beautiful, even when it’s not working with the fantastic action scenes, fire and gunshots – we also get stunning scenic shots, aerial panoramic shots and cityscapes which just add icing and a cherry to the top of the well made, well enjoyed and very tasty cake.

So go, watch, let me finish watching and once we are both done I will do another review which will be bigger and spoiler filled. This will be fun. Enjoy it, it’s a must.

Please note I am not being paid for this, AMAZON have not asked me to promote their show or service. I am just a fan sharing and caring.

  • If you could write about one thing ( that you haven’t yet) what would it be? Tough one because if I feel strongly about something I will write about it. I guess Parenting – Being a Daddy. That is the reason this blog started. I haven’t done it yet because I don’t have no child. But one day.

  • Where do you get your creative inspiration from? I struggle at times, I struggle to juggle work, spare time, blog time and life. So when I want to make something like this really big I need to big down deep to find something to push and make me focus. Creative just flows, I have always been a creative person – it’s just finding the drive to put those creative juices into action.

My Questions

  1. In the past 6 months what is one thing that has surprised you about yourself?
  2. What is the best life hack you have ever seen?
  3. If you could wake up tomorrow with the skills to play any sport or instrument what would it be and why?

Man Vs Movies – Top Five Comedy Films

fantasy

I used to have a job at a calendar factory but I got the sack because I took a couple of days off.

This week is Comedy week, you know those films that you can watch over and over again, regardless of the situation – get home drunk, sling this on, bored and feeling down, this is a go to pick. Comedies are the best genre that you can sling on for easy watching.

Image result for i love you man movie posterI Love you Man

SLAPPAA DA BASS!

This films follows Peter, a newly engaged estate agent who has to find a best man for his wedding. As a man with very few friends, Peter has some ups and downs until he finds the one! It features some Canadian rock n roll, some cheesy one liners and the Hulk.

AnchormanAnchorman

60% of the time, it works every time.

Following the number one news team in San Diego, Anchorman is a story of change and equality as the first female news anchor joins the team. Which does not go down well with the men in the current team. Which brings on a battle of the sexes.

Down as one of the most quotable movies

Tropic Thunder (2008)Tropic Thunder

I’m the dude, playing the dude, disguised as another dude.

A team of actors playing G.I.’s for a war movie are dropped into the wilderness for a sense a realism. Until they come across a real drug tribe. Still under the impression they are actors the team have to adapt and come to terms with the situation they are in.

Image result for shaun of the dead movie posterShaun of the Dead

Oh, she’s engaged. – That was quick.

A duo of normal working London lads wake up from a messy night to discover things aren’t what they were and there has been a Z-Word outbreak (we are not using the Z-Word), so fuelled by love, a want to survive and the opportunity to find a place to smoke they set off to collect family and friends as they head off to the pub (classic British attitude right).

The Hangover Movie PosterThe Hangover

It’s not a purse its a satchel Indiana Jones has one.

The one night guys love about wedding planning – the Stag Do and in this case, the lad’s head off to Vegas for a classy evening, steak dinner and a bit of gambling. But suddenly they wake up to find the hotel room trashed, no memory of what happened and the Groom missing. The group have to remember, investigate and find the groom to get back for the wedding.

Hilarity ensues.

I know all of these are pretty new, modern comedies but I just love them all – don’t get me wrong. I love the old school ones too; Brewster’s Millions, The Carry On Series, Trading Places, Airplane. Anything by Mel Brooks. But these ones just pipped it for me as a – I can watch anytime anywhere kind of thing.

What do you think? What is your go to comedy? What makes you chuckle?

Man Vs Movies – Top Five Fantasy Films

fantasy.jpg

I’ve stumbled across a map, X marks the spot and the jewels are waiting, hidden in the vase in some dusty attic.

It’s Fantasy week!

I had a top five picked out but the more I thought about it the more I thought, Fantasy is a HUGE genre.

Indiana Jones Poster Last Crusade HD WallpapersIndiana Jones – The Last Crusade

I have always loved the Indiana Jones trilogy (we don’t talk about the Crystal Skull) and they were a big part of my growing up, at one point I wanted to become an archeologist just like our lovable rouge Indy.

But truth be told the real reason the Last Crusade wins is simply because of one charmingly dashing Scott – Sean Connery. Playing Indy’s father he brings a new level to Fords character as we watch the two play off each other in such a dynamic duo.

Following the hunt for the Holy Grail, this film ticks all Adventure Fantasy boxes in my head. Action, Humour, Good vs Evil and booby Traps.

There was also a family story, that the Tank Indy fights on near the end, was my dad’s uncle Ted’s tractor that the studio bought of him, stripped and repurposed into a tank. I never asked how much truth was in this – but the whole family were in on this. Hmmm.

Lord of the Rings – The Two Towers

Can’t have a genre like this without throwing something from Jackson’s catalogue of masterpiece Tolkien films. For me LOTR beat the Hobbit set (even though it’s slightly dated now days) and within those three – all are amazing in their own right but for me the second instalment wins and let’s be honest, that is because of the Battle of Helms Deep.

But also as story, I think the 2nd of a trilogy is very important. It’s got the biggest job of linking the two bookends, picking up from the first with such momentum that it can carry itself , while building the cliffhanger and suspense for the final piece.

Two Towers does that and so much more. Bringing key characters, plots and arcs into the Middle Earth world. With amazing action sequences, brilliant character chemistry and just opening up the vast fantasy world of Tolkien. This film and the whole franchise are a must.

Pirates of the Caribbean – Curse of the Black Pearl

Savvy pick hey! I really enjoy the Pirate films, Captain Jack Sparrow is such a fun character and Johnny Depp plays him so well.

Following the antics on the seven seas, this film introduces us to the world of pirates, ghosts, ships and swagger.  As the story focuses on cursed Aztec gold – which leaves a crew invincible but ghostly and stuck longing to be free. It has everything that you expect, swashbuckling fights, sun soaked locations, witty one liners and rum, lots and lots of rum.

Yes the franchise is still going and yes maybe they should have stopped a couple of films back, but regardless I love them all – they are just fun easy going films and without a doubt the first easily earn’t a space on this list.

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

Little fact for you, this is the first and only film I ever downloaded (in the naughty sense). Because I was so excited to watch this film, bringing awesome literacy character together in one stylish gothic noir style world what is not to love.

Following Allan Quatermain, The Invisible Man, Mina Harker, Tom Sawyer, Captain Nemo, Dorian Grey and Jekyll/Hyde as they team up to face a new world terrorist on the turn of the century. The Phantom who turns out to be James Moriarty the villainous arch-enemy of Sherlock Holmes.

The film itself got panned and in turn didn’t generate enough interest or money for a sequel but I none the less loved it, the casting, the sets, the way they bought these characters together was amazing. I guess it’s a guilty pleasure but one I highly recommend people see.

The Mummy (1999) PG-13 - "Death is only the beginning."The Mummy

Not the Tom Cruise surprise but the 1999 version with Brandon Fraser.

As a kid this was also one of those films that, if it was on – regardless of where it was in the film I could put it on and enjoy it. After a group of archaeologists accidentally wake a cursed priest mummy who is hell-bent on bringing his bride back to life to rule the world, our heroes have to set out across Egypt to find a way to stop him and bring peace back to the world.

If you like shotgunning the undead, over the top humour, cool dark arts and just some awesome fantasy fun. This is the one for you! Nothing too serious, just some easy-going fun.

Thank you for another spellbound, knife wielding fun old post. What do you think of my picks? Is there something that should be on the list? What is your list?

Don’t forget to like and share this post and also vote for the next genre.

Always a pleasure!

Man Vs Movies – Top Five Thrillers.

Thrillers

No one is safe, no one is trusted, nothing is what it seems.

This week its Thriller week! There isn’t a single MJ tribute act in sight. Just Me, You, Five Films and a feeling of confusion as you struggle to understand what is going on and your adrenaline begins pumping.

Shall we begin?

Image result for memento posterMemento

“Remember Sammy Jenkins”

This one seems to slip under people’s radar and I can’t for the life of me work out why. It’s an amazing film put together by Christopher (Dark Knight) Nolan and is backed up with the incredible talent of Guy (You know his face) Pearce.

The Narrative of the film plays in two lines, jumping back and forth from either timeline. Due to the nature of the film this style works ridiculously well.

It follows a man who can’t store short-term memories ever since the night he was attacked and his wife murdered. But determined to find the killer he sets out on the hunt, aided with notes, photos and tattoo’s – he is against all odds, not knowing what is truth or a lie and not being able to trust his own mind will he have closure.

It’s a superb, smart, gritty film that after one watch will have you hooked and ready for a second viewing.

Shutter Island PosterShutter Island

“You’re smarter than you look, Marshall. That’s probably not a good thing.”

Now I think a lot of people have mixed feelings on this film, with the own interpretation of the ending. Which can be said about all of these movies as thrillers and twists can be very subjective.

This film follows a US Marshal investigating a missing persons case on a remote secluded Island that is home to a Psychiatric Hospital. As they get to the island as storm sets in, leaving him and his partner stranded on the Island for a few days.

Paranoia sets in as the pair try to uncover the truth as to what happened to the missing woman, mixed with uncooperative staff members, crazy patiences and the elements beating them back. The case becomes harder and harder until the final act where the storm breaks and so does the case. What happened to the woman?

I think it’s a great rollercoaster and has some great twists, based on the German Existential Horror Movie – The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. The film oozes the same creepy noir style that will leave you a little scared and confused.

Related imagePrisoners

“Pray for the best, but prepare for the worst.”

Prisoners really hits home with some people because it plays on one of people’s biggest fears – something happening to their children. In this two young girls go missing after a joint family meal for Thanksgiving, it follows the Detective on the case and the four parents all dealing with it in different ways.

It’s highlights man’s nature to try to rationalise everything, while also showing the nature to do whatever it takes to protect family.

As the spiders web of twists and turns continues to get darker and deeper the family and Detective are put into the ring and have to overcome so much to get an answer. Resulting in the final answer, the ending result and the outcome.

With an amazing cast which I have to praise Jackman and Gyllenhaal for their performances. The film stands out and if you haven’t seen it you really should. I can’t rate it enough.

Image result for nocturnal animals movie posterNocturnal Animals

“When you love someone you have to be careful with it, you might never get it again.”

Looks like Mr Gyllenhaal is popping back up on the list – maybe he does too many Thrillers, or maybe I really rate him. The second I think.

This film I missed at the cinema and was really gutted I had, after watching it I was mesmerized by it. It’s a strangely beautiful film which in some respects blurs the lines between reality and fiction. Following an Art Gallery owner as she reads her Ex-Husbands Novel dedicated to her. The story starts to hit home as she started to notice similarities between the novel, the characters and their own broken relationship.

I can’t say much more as it get very complex and I worry spoiling something, but I will say stay focused, stay aware of everything, what is real and what is the novel. And also who is who.

It’s dark, it’s complex, its exiting, I love it. But good luck.

ALSO COMPLETELY FORGOT – I can’t praise this film without mentioning Michael Shannon. Such a talent, this film shows he’s abilities down to a T and you will not be disappointed.

Man Vs Movies – Top Five Inspirational and Motivational Films

inspiration

Well look where we are at – Episode Five! Who knew this series would even get here. It’s amazing and everyone has been so supportive along the way.

At the start of the series I asked for people’s input and ideas for categories and episode themes. This list is one of those suggestions.

Bexa over on HelloBexa wanted to see my Top Five Motivational, Inspirational list. Well the genre made it into the poll and after a second count it have won. So thank you and well done to Bexa. If you haven’t had a chance to get to know her, let me strongly suggest hitting that link and saying hello. She is such a great supportive girl, an inspirational blogger and all round amazing, friendly, fun person.

So let’s start this journey.

Image result for into the wild posterInto the Wild

“Happiness only real when shared!”

Following the true story of Chris McCandless as he literally sells up and just begins to travel across America and Alaska. Living life to its fullest and just experiencing the real natural world first hand, Chris meets hitchhikers, tourists and other amazing eye-opening people on his travels showing the true beauty of human nature as he longs to explore and be free.

The emotional side of the film creeps in with his family and parents dealing with his sudden disappearance, lessons he learns along the way and watching him fail certain vital tasks. Mixed in with an amazing soundtrack by the legendary Eddie Vedder, the film constantly spikes all emotions and hits every note perfectly. Leaving you inspired to travel, see the world and enjoy life to its fullest.

When watching remember it’s based on a true story, this makes the ending all the more harrowing and hurtful.

Image result for it's a wonderful life poster artIt’s a Wonderful Life

“Look, Daddy. Teacher says, every time a bell rings an angel gets his wings.”

One of my favourite Christmas films sneaking into the inspirational mix too. If you haven’t seen this film I have to ask . . . why? What happened? It follows George (played by the charming golden era legend that is James Stewart. As he grows up in a little sleepy town. You know the ones where everyone knows everyone and its cute but nothing major going on. Dreaming of travelling and going to college, George finds himself constantly putting his life on hold to help other. His father’s business, his brother’s education and tour in the army. Every time he is set to venture into the big wide world the little town pulls him back.

He comes to terms with this reluctantly and settles down, has a family, grows the business and is general well-respected and loved by all. Until a twist of fate kicks in and it looks like George will be going to jail for fraud and starts to think everyone would be better off if he were dead as his life insurance plan would pay out.

In a fit of rage and depression one snowy evening he attempts to end it all, when he is saved by an old man named Clarence. He explains how he were never born and Clarence decided to make it so and show George a life if he were never born.

It ends with George realising he has worth and me with a choked up tear in my eye.

Every time, no matter how many times I watch it, I find myself a slight blubbering mess. Left with inspiration and the power of knowing, life is good – life is what we make it and everyone effects each other even if we don’t think it.

Image result for pay it forward art posterPay it forward

“What did you ever do to change the world?”

Pay it Forward I think is a really under appreciated film. Following a young boy who for a school project sets up a charitable movement called “Pay it Forward” where he does a favour for three people and in return asks these people to do a favour for another three people. Spiraling outwards and growing as more and more people become part of this movement.

It shows how the innocent of the young is pure and meaningful. With all the good intentions in the world to change it for the better.

The casting is superb as well. With Haley Joel (I See Dead People) Osment as the young school boy who starts the movement, Helen Hunt as his loving mother and Kevin (Don’t mention his name) Spacey as the influential teacher who sets the assignment for the class.

It’s such a good feel good film with such a good idea and heart at the centre of it. It makes you want to do good, to be the better person and to help humanity. Just a heads up now, the ending is totes emosh. You’ve been warned.

Image result for wild quirky poster cheryl strayedWild

“My life, like all lives, mysterious, irrevocable, sacred, so very close, so very present, so very belonging to me.”

Another true story based on a woman’s journey of self discovery while dealing with grief as she travels the Pacific Crest Trail through America.

It’s rammed full of inspiration and motivation and if it doesn’t want you to go and get lost in the world then I don’t know what will.

Much like “Into the Wild” it’s a breathtaking visual masterpiece using the location as its own character. With some scenes that are a bit uneasy to watch the over message of the film is beautiful and I can’t recommend it enough.

Image result for wonder film posterWonder

“You can’t blend in when you were born to stand out.”

Wonder is a loving tale about a boy – Auggie, who has mandibulofacial dysostosis a rare facial deformity. Spending a lot of his childhood being home schooled. His parents decide its time to go to school with other children to help his social skills. Starting the fifth grade, Auggie is like any other 10-year-old – minus his appearance. He likes movies, games and having fun. But instantly he is outcast by his peers due to his looks.

The movie tackles the hardships of being different, the dark side of childhood and how cruel children who don’t understand can be. While also showing the loving side of family and making the best of a bad situation. It drills right down into the human soul, hitting you in the feels and dragging a smile of reassurance back out as it does so. It’s a sweet film that inspires the positive side of human nature, highlighting how dark it can be but showing that once out of the dark the light always shines through.

Accompanied by an outstanding cast – Jacob Tremblay as Auggie is yet again amazing! Owen Wilson stepping out of his pure comical roles to slide into something more serious, but still bringing a light-hearted touch as the father trying to deal. And Julia Roberts playing the mother. I don’t really need to plug her, it took my years to realise but she is amazing in anything isn’t she.

Prepare yourself for a little choked up teary version of yourself to appear and just enjoy the film. Feel motivated when you come out and do good.

Honestly if these don’t inspire you to travel, do good or make amends then I am not sure what will. They are all beautiful pieces of work which inspire, amaze, make me cry and make me smile. Let me know what inspires and motivates you, what gives you that can do attitude and what brings a tear to your eye.

Also let me know if you have seen any of these and if so what you think to them, if not, go watch them and then let me know.

Peace.
